If your business still uses Windows 10, the priority is to check which PCs can move to Windows 11, which need replacement, and which may need temporary Extended Security Updates. Before buying a Windows 11 Pro license in India, confirm your current Windows edition, hardware eligibility and licensing route so you do not pay for licenses your organisation may not need.

Key takeaways:

  • Windows 10 standard support ended on 14 October 2025.

  • Commercial Windows 10 ESU Year 1 ends on 13 October 2026.

  • Commercial ESU can continue into Year 2 and Year 3 for eligible organisations.

  • Eligible Windows 10 devices can upgrade to Windows 11 at no additional Microsoft upgrade charge.

  • Check hardware eligibility before buying Windows 11 Pro.

  • Audit your existing licenses before buying new ones.

  • For multiple devices, review the correct business or commercial licensing route rather than buying random low-cost keys.

What changed after Windows 10 end of support?

Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 PCs did not suddenly stop working on that date, but standard security updates, fixes and feature support ended for normal installations.

For businesses, that changes Windows 10 from a routine desktop platform into a migration-planning issue.

If you manage 10, 20 or 50 PCs, the wrong response is to assume that every device needs a new Windows 11 license. Some machines may already qualify for a free upgrade. Others may fail Windows 11 hardware requirements and be better candidates for replacement. A smaller group may need temporary ESU coverage while you finish application testing or hardware procurement.

The first job is therefore device classification, not license buying.

What does 13 October 2026 mean for businesses?

For commercial organizations, 13 October 2026 is the end of Windows 10 ESU Year 1. It is not the final possible commercial ESU date.

Microsoft currently lists the commercial Windows 10 ESU schedule as follows:

ESU period

Coverage end date

Year 1

13 October 2026

Year 2

12 October 2027

Year 3

10 October 2028

Extended Security Updates are intended to provide additional critical and important security updates. They do not extend the normal Windows product lifecycle or add new features.

That makes ESU useful as a temporary bridge, especially where a business application, specialized hardware device or replacement cycle prevents an immediate Windows 11 migration.

It should not become a substitute for a migration plan.

Which PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 Pro?

Microsoft says an existing Windows 10 device can upgrade to Windows 11 when it meets the minimum Windows 11 hardware requirements and the relevant upgrade conditions. You can check eligibility using Windows Update or Microsoft's PC Health Check tool.

Key Windows 11 requirements currently include:

  • compatible 64-bit processor

  • at least 4 GB RAM

  • at least 64 GB storage

  • UEFI firmware

  • Secure Boot capability

  • Trusted Platform Module 2.0

Microsoft also states that upgrades from Windows 10 to Windows 11 are free for eligible devices. That matters when planning a Windows 10 to Windows 11 upgrade across a business fleet.

Illustrative example

Suppose your company has 30 Windows 10 Pro laptops.

After checking them, you might find:

  • 21 meet Windows 11 requirements and can upgrade

  • 5 fail the hardware requirements and should be considered for replacement

  • 4 run specialist software that still needs compatibility testing

In that situation, buying 30 new Windows 11 Pro licenses immediately could be unnecessary.

A better approach is to upgrade the 21 eligible machines, evaluate replacement options for the five incompatible devices, and decide whether the remaining four need temporary ESU coverage.

Windows 11 Pro license in India: price and licensing options

The correct Windows 11 Pro licensing route depends on what is already installed on the device.

Microsoft's India Store currently lists Windows 11 Pro (Download) at 16,515 including GST. This is the current Microsoft retail reference price, not as a PI Software quotation.

Microsoft also notes that the retail Windows 11 Pro download is intended for PCs needing a new Windows license and meeting Windows 11 system requirements. Buying the license does not make unsupported hardware compatible.

A simple way to think about your options is:

Your situation

Likely action

Compatible Windows 10 Pro PC

Check eligibility for Windows 11 Pro upgrade

Windows 11 Home PC needing Pro features

Evaluate a Windows 11 Pro edition upgrade

New or unlicensed eligible PC

Purchase an appropriate Windows 11 Pro license

Multiple business PCs

Review commercial or volume licensing options

Windows 10 device not yet ready to migrate

Consider eligible ESU coverage temporarily

For business purchases, also confirm whether the quoted amount is GST-inclusive or GST-extra, what license documentation you receive, and whether the license type matches your deployment.

If you are buying several PCs, volume or commercial licensing may be worth reviewing. However, business licensing should not be treated simply to obtain cheaper product keys. The existing operating system license, device eligibility and Microsoft licensing terms still matter.

What should a 10–50-user business do now?

1. Build a Windows device inventory

Record:

  • device name

  • user

  • Windows edition

  • activation status

  • processor

  • RAM

  • storage

  • TPM status

  • Windows 11 eligibility

  • critical business applications

Without this inventory, it is easy to overbuy licenses or overlook unsupported devices.

2. Check Windows 11 compatibility

Use Windows Update or PC Health Check before ordering licenses or replacement PCs.

  • A device that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements should be treated as a hardware-planning issue, not a license-key issue.

3. Test business applications

  • Check accounting software, ERP tools, VPN clients, security software, printers, scanners and any specialized peripherals.

  • A machine may technically support Windows 11 while a business-critical application still needs testing.

4. Separate devices into three groups

Create three simple buckets:

  • Upgrade now: Compatible PCs with tested applications.

  • Replace: PCs that fail hardware requirements or are already near the end of their useful life.

  • Temporary ESU: Machines that cannot be migrated yet because of a genuine operational dependency.

This gives management a clearer budget than one large “Windows 11 project” estimate.

5. Confirm licensing before purchasing

  • Check whether a device already has a valid Windows license, and whether its current edition provides an eligible upgrade path.

  • For new licenses, buy through a genuine, traceable source and retain your purchase records.

Frequently asked questions

1. Is Windows 11 Pro free if I already have Windows 10 Pro?

If your Windows 10 device is eligible for Windows 11, Microsoft states that the Windows 11 upgrade is free. Hardware requirements still apply.

2. How do I check whether my PC supports Windows 11?

Use Microsoft's PC Health Check tool or check Windows Update. The device must meet current Windows 11 hardware requirements, including TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability and supported hardware.

3. Does buying Windows 11 Pro make an old PC compatible?

No. A Windows 11 Pro license does not override Microsoft's hardware requirements. Microsoft advises that if an existing Windows 10 PC cannot use Windows Update to install the Windows 11 upgrade because it is incompatible, purchasing the retail Windows 11 Pro download will not fix that limitation.

4. Is 13 October 2026 the final Windows 10 ESU date?

Not for commercial organisations. It is the end of commercial ESU Year 1. Microsoft currently lists Year 2 through 12 October 2027 and Year 3 through 10 October 2028.

5. Should a small business buy Windows 11 Pro instead of Home?

Windows 11 Pro is generally the edition businesses evaluate when they need business-focused management and security capabilities. Your exact requirement depends on how devices are managed and which features your organisation actually uses.
